Typography
LECTURE:
Week
two, we had a discussion regarding our first task, Mr. Vinod
explained in more details about the definition of typography, he said
that typography is basically things that legible, readable and appeal
when display, in typographic details are important, for example space
between line, letter spacing, paragraph and others that related.
Nowadays, publisher have no clues of typography, it can be seen from
magazine for instance, they constantly squeeze the space as one page,
line spacing is not well organized, it shows that in typography
paragraph and type arrangement are really important. Then, he
introduced us the importance of lines in typography, on which,
according to him we need to know it by heart, so it will be easier
for him to give a comment based of our work 'alphabet'. There are few
of it, mean line, cap line (capital line), descender line, ascender
line. Mr. Vinod asked us to redo our work, and he showed us how to
doing a type creation for task 1, we did play Pictionary too, at the
end of the class he gave us our second task.
INSTRUCTION:
Task
2 (15%): Type Design
You
are to design a number of alphabets and punctuations, as
determined by the teacher. You will begin by sketching and exploring
a minimum of 3 options.
The
sketches of the alphabets are to be submitted on A4 graph paper
for selection. As always, you will understand, analyse and
reflect on the knowledge acquired during the allotted weeks for the
task in your ePortfolio.
Starting
with the letter “o” design a string of alphabets of similar
characteristics. The subsequent letters must spell your name and
therefore the characteristics of the letters must represent
your personality.

There
are many more resources out there you may read, please do if you have
the time.
The
videos below should be viewed at a later stage of the task, when
students are more knowledgeable and ready to digitize their letters.
Marking
criteria: You will be judged on your creativity; the aesthetics of
your letter and how consistent are they with regard to their
character or personality – do they look like a family of
characters. You will be judged on whether you have made
the appropriate research and analysis of other typefaces,
whether you have demonstrated critical thinking and exploration.
This evidence must be visible in your postings in the eportfolio and
your in-class process work.
Duration:
2 weeks

PROCESS
a)
RESEARCH:
At
first, i did some research based of other typefaces, what is the
science behind fonts and how people feel based of it.
Refer
to the link below:
Then
i found a very interesting background of typefaces, a type
classification of it, there are thousands of typefaces but it is
important to understand the basic typefaces styles, in the website
the author narrow it to seven important typefaces.
Refer
to the link below:
I
found that it was really interesting because the author provide an
interesting periodic table of typefaces.

Example
of some typefaces

Qomolangma-Horyig font, popular among Buddha;

b)
Ideas
I
try to create letter starting with "O", so i did refer to
few pictures of "O"

Then,
I try to find a unique and a cute font, according to the task I need
to create something that related to my personality. Based on a few
examples, I found that there are a few fonts that are almost similar
and interesting;
Alphabets
in a Cross-stitch;

Cute
examples;
(a)

(b)
Beautiful Initials;

(c)
Unique font that catch my eyes;

(d)
Sample of font that using the 'crown', symbol, it really caught my
attention;

I
can say that crown is a symbol of power, wealth, beauty and
uniqueness; I can simply relate it to myself, because honestly I love
things that are exclusive, rare and look sophisticated.
Refer
to the picture below, it shows that I do own things that have a crown
symbol too, one of the idea came from there. I usually like things
that glitter, shining and unique, it represents a crown too. On the
crown we can easily spotted diamonds or beautiful shining stone too,
so it's a lot easier to relate a symbol of the crown with my
personality.

Few
attempts, symbol of crown as my reference;
(1)

(2)

(3)

(4)
Final alphabet, "O"; (minimum of 3 types)

(5)
Symbol that i prefer, plus my name using the crown alphabet i have
created;

Thought
Process
When
it comes to personality, Mr. Vinod wanted us to create an alphabet
that shows our personality. Symbol of crown can easily relate to my
personality, because I am a very conservative person, I want
everything to be perfectly done as what I want it to be, sometimes I
can be really bossy and fussy too, I adore expensive and branded
things, it really catches my eyes. In addition, as a collector I love
to collect things that are shining, glitter, rare and unique. I can
simply say that, sometime I can be overreacted like a queen and
obviously every queen will have a crown of their own.
So
as a conclusion, I believe that symbol of crown can simply relate to
me, because it mirrors my personality.
Feedback
According
to Mr. Vinod, my alphabets are very decorative and it will be too
much when i write it out especially in a sentence. With calligraphy
pen and graph paper he help me to simplifies the alphabet, "it
will save time and calm down it", he also says, "from the
basic shape you have square shape form, so you can simplifies it by
reduce one space and make it less wider, you can add just little bit
bump on the 'a' alphabet, for the rest alphabet you just add
construction on the x-axis. At the end he finally simplifies the
alphabets, he says it does resemble the original alphabets, but
mutate it.
Reflection
(a)
Experience: I personally enjoy doing research regarding the typefaces
especially their uniqueness. There is actually a lot of it; most of
it is new for me. I found that the second task is rather more
interesting and challenging, I have learned a lot of new things
through my research in order to get some new ideas.
(b)
Observation : Basically at first i found that my drawing was very
simple and boring, and I could not really relate the alphabet with my
personality but through example and practices I believed that crown
is actually a symbol that can easily relate to my personality.
(C)
Finding: Honestly, I just realized that typography is such an
interesting subject besides psychology. I express and can use my own
creativity.
