The Booklet and Word portfolio

Lecture: Basically, Mr. Vinod checking our  last mocks-up for the booklet and gave us feedback. He also checking our wordportfolio and gave us few tips on how to edit it. At the of the class he taught us on how to create a pocket at the back of word portfolio back cover. Not to forget, the rule of third (on how to place the name and title of front cover for both, booklet and wordportfolio). For the booklet cover, Mr. Vinod says if we using black or white hard cover, we cannot use white color sticker paper.

Instructions: You need to create a booklet and come up with few lines about yourself. These lines will be arranged and expressed according to their meanings. Please refer to the previous eportfolio for further instructions.

The portfolio (30%): Eportfolio & Microsoft Word portfolio (PDF)

The portfolio is an edited document to include all the work produced in this course. It is a visual documentation of the process in chronological order (neatly packaged and presented). The Microsoft Word portfolio is developed progressively on a weekly basis throughout the semester, it is the hardcopy version of the eportfolio.

The hardcopy portfolio is an A4 bound document (See image below) that consists of research materials, sketches, fails, epiphanies, writings, images, drawings, text, etc. well arranged, organized and appealing. The document is also uploaded as a soft-copy PDF onto your eportfolio on the 14th week.

The ePortfolio is an online blog (Blogger engine) that is updated on a weekly basis, throughout the semester. The ePortfolio documents the summary of the lectures, records the instructions and feedback given, and documents the reflections of the student on a weekly basis.

Marking Criteria: The portfolio must showcase consistent evidence of students meticulous and chronological documentation of progress/process work in the module, students lectures, instructions, research, outcomes, feedback and reflections. The portfolio or eportfolio is clean clear, neat, labelled and dated, it needs to be easily navigable and easy on the eyes (visually supportive to the content)

Duration: 14 weeks
Deadline: week 14

Research:
Throughout the semester, I bought things from the Art Friend Shop in The Garden Mall, everything is there

Adjust and Execute (Final Booklet)
I've decided to stick with 3 types of font.
For artboard one, I use Century. Artboard two Century Gothic. Artboard three is Gill Sans Mt and artboard four is Calson 540 LT Std Italic. I refer back to the previous lesson on which Mr. Vinod show us there are few types of font which is compatible with each other. So basically I chose a compatible font for artboard one and two and for artboard three and four. So it will shows connection, besides the arrangement of the lines.
For the final booklet: I've have changed font for artboard three and adjust the artboard 4 design.

Wordportfolio: I did adjust the kerning, pictures size and few others in order to make it lighter and less pages, from week 1 until week 13. I did changed it to Helvetica font and 10pt size. In addition, I did adjust kerning for each lines, around '50 to 60' I also create a pocket at the back of the cover page.

Booklet: Since Mr. Vinod want variations of color, instead of using white sticker paper, I've changed it to purple and for the contents, I'm using light pink paper.
Mr. Vinod also wants us to apply the 'third rule' for the placement of name

Process: I did apply the rule of third for my booklet cover and wordportfolio front cover;(Booklet front cover, where I later place my name on the sticker paper)
Sticker paper:'I leave about 1mm space for each side', so it will be more neat;

Then, after divide the space according to the rules of third, I stick the sticker name on the top of right side.

Next for the front cover of the wordportfolio, Im using Helvetica font 10pt, and 13 leading. I place it according to the rules of third division,'on the top of right side'.

Feedback:
Hi Nadia,

You are hardworking and consistent in your effort towards work. I think your eportfolio was exemplary in that it documented and chronicled your journey really well. Your reflections were good and the outcomes were by and large good. The effort behind the work produced will certainly reflect in the results you will eventually obtain. I wish you well in your future undertakings and good luck.

Reflection:
Experience: In the overall, I've found that creating a booklet is very interesting task. We have been given a freedom to choose color of the cover, paper and design. I felt like I'm in the primary school, esspecially art class. So far this course really benefit me in many ways.
Observation: I'm struggling throughout the course, deadline at midnight etc, taking 6 subjects for this semester is not easy for me. Since it is my last task for the subject, I felt relief and looking back at my previous work from the wordportfolio, I can say that I'm not that bad, at least I'm trying my best and I didn't give up.
Finding: I've learn a lot from the course, I hope that I will always apply it later on.

Typography: (Week 12) Final Mocks-up for the Booklet

5.1.16 (Week 12)
Name: Fatin Nadia Binti Ishak (300 422 242)
Typography

Lecture: Basically we had an opportunity to ask questions regarding the booklet. We also discuss among each other for ideas and etc.
Instruction:
Task 2 (20%): The Booklet
Your task requires you to come up with 10-12 lines about your self. The lines can vary in the number of words (1 word, 5 words, 10 words). These lines will be arranged and expressed according to their meanings. Utilize the knowledge gained in all the tasks previously and express yourselves.
The booklet you are creating has 8 pages in all (2 A4 sheets stuck together and divided into halves). The format of the booklet is an accordion fold and affixed on either end with a card-board.
You have to compose your lines on the various pages, using a variety or appropriate fonts/typefaces, and then considering the size, impact of the respective artworks, place them in an appropriate sequence to ensure a healthy variation from page to page.
A demonstration of this shall be conducted in class. How to fold, how to create your illustrator template and how to place the typographic artworks (expressions of the different lines) in illustrator.
You will submit, a hardcopy print out and upload the respective JPEGs of the 8 pages in spreads of 2 onto your eportfolio.
Marking Criteria: Your work will be judged on whether you have been able to express the meaning of your sentences through your typography and layout (arrangement). The layouts must showcase sensitivity and creativity in the choice of font, its arrangement, its relevancy and its suitability in context of the sentences. It must reflect and enhance the inherent meaning of the sentences.
You must look at the arrangements for all the pages and decide whether the pages look like a cohesive unit, whether there is a level of consistency or variation, so as to avoid monotony or over-consistency.
You will be judged on whether you have demonstrated critical thinking and exploration, research capability, ability to chronologically document your process and reflect on your journey. This evidence must be visible in your postings in the eportfolio and your in-class process work.
Duration: 3 weeks
Deadline: week 13

Few research:

Earlier Mr. Vinod asking us to refer to Dadaism work:

http://people.sabanciuniv.edu/~ayiter/stylesforstarters/era_avantgarde.htm

I did Google example of Russian Costructivism, Dadaism and few others. Honestly, I can't really read the artwork, but I can say that the arrangements of the words make it looks unique.

Adjustment & Execute:

Since Mr. Vinod says I need to use more words and etc. I did put in quotes, psychologist fact, and how I currently feel. But then, all of it is related to me.

Picture above shows my artworks from Adobe Illustrator; for the front page of the booklet 'upper part' I'm using Century & Century Gothic. For the back page of the booklet 'lower part', I'm usingGill Sans MT Condensed & Calson 540 LTD Std Italic. Basically, I've only use three types of fonts.

Results:

Based on the previous comment, I've decided to play with the space, my work is very simple.
It's basically similar as a short story of myself, it's start with the title (my name: from the previous week task), according to Mr. Vinod we can make some adjustment, and obviously I did. Instead of having sharp end at each angle, I've changed it to a round end.
Next, an introduction part, my first artworks can be relate to the name, because it's again in the rounded shapes. Then are a plot of the story, climax and then conclusion part. At first glance, my story look like as if I'm having a Bipolar Disorder, 'mood swing', happy, sad, tired and proud all in one.

Final process:

Cut the THC PVC foam sheet. I remembered Mr. Vinod says I should let the 'artworks paper' hang in the middle of the cover. So, I've decided to give 'margin' of 1.5mm at every side of the 'artworks paper'. I've chosen white color because I'm using the white color paper for the content and sticker paper. For me it looks nice and clean.

Picture above shows how I basically cut the sticker paper, i cut it in rectangular size but left round end at each sides of the name artworks.

Picture above shows how I actually I try to find a middle point, the axis of 'x' & 'y', because I've decided to place the sticker paper exactly at the middle of the booklet cover.

Final I've manage to stick the sticker.

Feedback:
Mr. Vinod says my cover page is very big it should be 1.5mm extra instead of 1.5cm, but It's great I've managed to let tha artworks booklet hang in the centre.

For the booklet contents: He says good work in overall you have managed to relates each part with another, and for the last part of the artworks, it's fine I've managed to fit it in the space.

For the word portfolio, he says I need to change the size of the pictures and summarize the instructions.

Reflection:
Experience:
I went through a lot from this final task, personally I think that it is very challenging compare to previous task, because it's the combination of all. I've left my pendrive at the printing shop; it's really annoying because I did saved a lot of important things in there, the printing shop all of sudden went black out right after I print out my work and I'm rushing back, I am so careless. Anyway, my classmate did helps me throughout the course.

Observation:
I can say that, my knowledge for this subject is too little, in order for me to produce something good, but I've already trying my best.

Finding:
I've found that, in order to be success in this field, we need to really focus on the details of the work and it not an easy subject.
